Tuscan Retreat

Tuscan Retreat

Located in a small village in the Maremma region of Tuscany, this small but mighty home is made of fieldstone, terracotta and stucco. Built in the 17th Century and updated to be clean, uncomplicated and full of carefully selected furniture and objects. In the living room a specimen marble top is set on a contemporary chrome base for a coffee table and a 15th century antiquities capital serves as a side table to the pair of 1960's leather sling chairs. An old master painting of Mary Magdalene evokes a dark and sexy undercurrent while the 'bourgie' lamp is a fun and ironic modern take on the drama of the Baroque. Silk velvet pillows add tactile luminosity to the clean lines of the white woven upholstery on the contemporary sofa. The Flemish tapestry adds warmth to the stone home and tells a courtship allegory set in a lush garden. The efficient kitchen was redesigned with open shelving, DeVol accessories, a carved travertine sink and unlacquered brass fittings. The project melts design ideas from two continents to adapt to its special place in the world.
